ABOUT STOCKHOLM

Stockholm is located where the Baltic Sea meets Lake Mälaren and stretches across fourteen islands connected by 57 bridges, earning the Swedish capital the nickname „Beauty on the Water“.  Stockholm is an attractive capital that offers something for everyone: culture, nature, indulgence and an excellent infrastructure. Furthermore, the great transportation network in Sweden and to the whole Nordic area gives the possibilities to taste an interesting and beautiful part of Europe. It hosts the annual Nobel Prize ceremonies and banquet at the Stockholm Concert Hall and Stockholm City Hall.

BANK SERVICES - MONEY MATTERS

Banks are generally open from Monday to Friday from 09:00 – 15:00, on Thursdays until approximately 18:00 (closed on Saturdays and Sundays). There are multiple bank machines (ATMs) open 24 hours a day throughout the city which accept all major international bankcard.
The official currency of Sweden is the Swedish Krona (SEK, kr).

Cards

Sweden is a nearly cashless country. Most forms of public transport, including trams and airport buses, are now completely cash free and at many tourist attractions, clinics and shops you can only pay with credit or debit cards. Major credit cards are widely accepted, but please always check beforehand. Also note that in Sweden only Chip & PIN cards can make payments or withdraw cash.

Cash

Cash is still accepted in lots of places – especially at smaller businesses like cafés, bars and food trucks. If you need to exchange cash, avoid services at airports and hotels, where the exchange rates are generally poorer than in other parts of town.
ATMs are fairly plentiful in Sweden and are often called ‘Bankomats’. You should spot them easily as most of them are blue. Always select to be charged in local (SEK) currency, not your home currency, when withdrawing money to ensure you get the best exchange rates and fairest deals.

Cheques

Travellers’ cheques are widely accepted. You can exchange travellers’ cheques in Swedish banks, bureau de changes and most post offices. Some larger shops will also accept travellers’ cheques as a method of payment. Preference is given to cheques issued in Euros, sterling and US dollars.

CURRENCY

The official currency in Sweden is the Swedish Krona (SEK, kr).

1 SEK= 0,096 EUR = 0,085 GBP = 0,11 USD = 0,15 CAD = 12,28 JPY = 0,11 CHF = 0,16 AUD as per September 2018.

V.A.T.

The standard V.A.T. rate in Sweden is 25%.

SAFETY - CRIME

Stockholm remains a relatively safe, secure city. However, use of common sense is (always) required, as in any large city. Experience has shown that some basic precautionary measures should always be kept in mind in any city:

  • Do not carry important items like flight tickets, passports etc. with you when visiting the conference or strolling through the city, leave them in the hotel safe during your stay. Rather carry a Xerox copy of your passport or an identity card with you.
  • Try not to carry all documents, money, credit cards and other essential items and valuables in one bag or purse. If it is lost or stolen, everything will be gone and might be difficult to replace on short notice, especially passports and visa to return to your country of residence.
  • Take off your name badge when leaving the conference centre.
  • In heavily frequented tourist zones and the metro at rush hour, be aware of attemps of scam and pickpocketing.
  • Do not respond to anybody unknown to you who comes up to you on the street engaging you in a conversation, no matter how safe they appear to be.

TELEPHONE CALLS

The country code of Sweden is 46 and the Stockholm city code is 8.

TIME ZONE
